Savasana Poem: Space

As we converge on this place, we honour the space.

We have journeyed with intent from diverse directions, diverse situations, diverse experiences. We all want to be here. It is our desire to be here that unites us. We all come with the willingness to leave the world at the door.

We enter a sacred place. A holy place. Set apart from the outside world. We take off our socks and walk barefoot across the stripped wooden floor. We walk away from the stresses of the everyday. We settle onto our mats, settle into the calm. We fully arrive into this space.

Here we encounter the purest of peace.

This safe place will be our safe base for the next hour.

The simplicity of the surroundings soothes our souls. All is prepared. We have everything we need within reach – a strap, a block, a blanket, a mat. And nothing more.

Dim the lights. Slow the pace.

Let the twinkling fairy lights spread their magic.

Let the gentle music flow into every corner.

Let the still, small voice guide and prompt, encourage and challenge.

Let this be so.

We allow the space to enter our very being – the air to invade our lungs; the serenity to clear our minds; the stretch to create space between each of our vertebrae.

We have to acknowledge however that there is no such thing as a perfect space. However hard we try, there will always be distractions. No space can block out all distractions. Strains of music from the studio next door. Sounds of a commotion rising up from the street below. The whirr of the air conditioning. A cough. Rain against the window.

And however hard we try, thoughts crowd into our inner space. Regrets about what was said at breakfast. Anxiety about what we have to face today. Mental to do lists. We chase them away, but they just keep coming.

So we allow the distractions to come and go, the thoughts to come and go. We hold loosely to them. We put aside our frustrations. We let them go.

For the space does not have to be perfect. It is what it is. It is enough. It is good. Just as it is.

And we do not have to be perfect. We are what we are. We are enough. We are good. Just as we are.

So thank you. It has been a joy for us to share this space today. To breathe this air and to move in unison. To stretch out and reach up and push down and draw large circles. To explore the space. To enjoy the space.

And now we lace up our trainers and pick up our bags.

We disperse without leaving a trace.

Yet we leave feeling lighter.

For we each carry a fragment of the space away with us in our hearts, our bodies, our minds and our souls.

Our unique fragment of this space.
