What is a meditation cushion?
Meditation cushions, are props that are used within restorative yoga and meditation practices to help improve posture and alignment. There are two types of meditation cushions, zafu cushions which are round, and zabuton pillows which are square. They are comfortable pillows that offer ample support to help you to sit or maintain poses for longer periods of time.
How do I choose a good meditation cushion?
To choose the right meditation cushion, you should first consider the shape. For example, a round zafu cushion may be best for beginners with limited flexibility in their hips, whereas a zabuton is more suited for those who wish for extra support for their knees and ankles during meditation. Secondly, you should consider the material, a buckwheat meditation cushion moulds to your body and offers support, whilst still remaining comfortable. Buckwheat cushions can also be easily height-adjusted by adding to or removing the stuffing. Alternatively, recron filled cushions offer more firmess and are great for enhancing support. The most important point is to choose a cushion that is comfortable for you, since the main function of the meditation cushion is to keep you comfortable whilst in a sitting position.
Why use a meditation cushion?
A meditation cushion can help yoga and meditation practitioners to improve their posture by supporting the spine, and lifting hips off the floor to help relieve any pressure. This extra aid can help you to meditate for longer and enjoy your mindfulness practice. For restorative yoga, zafu pillows and zabutons can be used to aid yogis into positions that they may otherwise struggle with and make the session safer by providing support and cushioning.
What shape meditation cushion should I get?
If you struggle with hip flexibility, a round or crescent shaped cusion is recommended to lift your hips off the ground and relieve pressure. This should allow your knees to be closer to the ground, whilst also supporting the natural curvature of your spine. Round meditation cushions, or zafus, are recommended for beginners to restorative yoga and meditation. If you'd like to have more support for your feet and ankles to maintain a comfortable sitting position and meditate for an extended period, a square zabuton cushion is recommended. For ultimate comfort, a zabuton and meditation cushion can be used together.
How to sit while meditating?
The way that you sit on a meditation cushion will be dependent on the pose that you are trying to achieve. If you are using a round zafu cushion, you may wish to try the lotus or half-lotus position with your legs crossed and feet resting on your inner thighs. Alternatively you could try the Sukhasana pose with your legs crossed at a more comfortable angle. A square meditation pillow is ideal for poses where you are sitting on your knees, or where you need extra support at the ankles. Ultimately, a meditation cushion is used to provide comfort and should be used in a way that supports you to extend your practice.
