The Art of Block Printing

When we first started thinking about how to mark thirty years of Yogamatters, we knew we wanted to create something that reflected the relationships, craftsmanship and traditions that have shaped our journey over the past three decades. The Peace Lily Collection grew from that idea.

During our visit to India earlier this year, we spent time exploring the remarkable craft traditions that continue to thrive there. Before travelling south to visit our production partners, we sourced a beautiful hand block printed fabric in Jaipur, drawn to its quiet character and the care that was evident in every detail.

Block printing is a craft that rewards patience. Each design starts with a hand-carved wooden block, shaped over days by skilled artisans until only the pattern remains. The fabric is then printed by hand, one impression at a time. Dip. Align. Press. Lift.

No two lengths of fabric are ever exactly the same. Tiny variations become part of their beauty, a reminder that they have been made by people, not machines. For us, that’s what this collection celebrates.

Not simply thirty years of Yogamatters, but the relationships with makers and craftspeople whose skills continue to inspire us, and the enduring connection between yoga, craftsmanship and the value of making something well.

We hope that every piece in the Peace Lily Collection carries a little of that story with it.
