    Tree Pose (Vrikshasana)

A balancing pose that brings focus and stability, Tree Pose invites you to root down through one leg while reaching upwards, just like a tree. Simple in shape but challenging...

    Category: Standing / Balance

    Difficulty: Beginner

    Sanskrit/Pronunciation: Vrksasana (vrik-SHAH-suh-nuh)

Main Focus: Balance, Legs, Ankles, Hips

Props: Yoga Brick, Yoga Chair, Good Grip Yoga Mat

Tree Pose (Vrksasana) is a standing balance that strengthens the legs and ankles while encouraging stability, concentration and body awareness. With one foot grounded and the opposite foot resting against the standing leg, the pose challenges balance while gently opening the hip of the lifted leg. The hands can remain at the heart or reach overhead, allowing you to explore different levels of stability and expression in the pose.

    How to Practise
    1. Start in Mountain Pose
    2. Shift weight into left foot, grounding through the sole
    3. Bring right foot to inner left thigh or calf (avoid the knee)
    4. Press foot and leg gently against each other
    5. Bring palms together at chest, or raise arms overhead like branches
    6. Gaze softly at a fixed point for balance
    7. Hold for 30 seconds to 1 minute, then switch sides
    Benefits
    • Improves balance and stability in the legs
    • Strengthens thighs, calves, ankles, and spine
    • Opens hips and enhances posture
    • Builds focus and mental clarity
    Modifications
    • Place toes on the floor with heel resting on ankle for more support
    • Stand near a wall for assistance with balance
    • Use a block under the raised foot if bringing it higher isn’t comfortable

To find more support and stability in Tree Pose, rest your heel on your ankle and hold your arms either by your sides or in prayer. Stay like this until you feel comfortable enough to raise your foot higher up your leg.
