Revolved Half Moon Pose (Parivrtta Ardha Chandrasana)

A challenging balance that combines strength, stability, and a deep spinal twist.

Category: Standing / Balance / Twist

    Difficulty: Intermediate – Advanced

    Sanskrit/Pronunciation: Parivrtta Ardha Chandrasana (par-ee-VRIT-tah AR-dah chan-DRAHS-uh-nuh)

Main Focus: Balance, Core, Spine, Legs

Props: Yoga Brick, Yoga Chair, Wall

Revolved Half Moon Pose (Parivrtta Ardha Chandrasana) is a challenging standing balance that combines strength, stability and rotation through the spine. Practised by balancing on one leg with the opposite leg extending behind, the torso twists open as one hand reaches towards the floor and the other extends upwards. The pose strengthens the legs and core while developing balance, coordination and spinal mobility. A yoga brick beneath the lower hand can raise the floor and provide additional support, while a yoga chair or wall can help with stability as you build confidence in the pose.

    How to Practise
    1. Begin in a High Lunge with the right foot forward
    2. Place your left hand on the floor (or a brick) about a foot in front of your right foot
    3. Shift your weight forward and lift the left leg parallel to the floor
    4. Square the hips and extend the spine
    5. Bring your right hand to your hip or reach it skyward
    6. Twist through the torso, turning your chest to the right
    7. Keep the lifted leg strong and active
    8. Gaze to the side or up at your top hand (if balanced)
    9. Hold for 5–8 breaths, then gently release and switch sides
    Benefits
    • Strengthens legs, ankles, and core
    • Enhances balance and coordination
    • Improves spinal mobility and digestion through the twist
    • Stretches hamstrings, calves, and the IT band
    Modifications
    • Use a block under the lower hand for more height and balance
    • Keep the top hand on the hip if extending it destabilises you
    • Practise against a wall for added support and alignment
    • Avoid if you have low back issues or difficulty balancing

    Revolved Half Moon with Brick

Placing the bottom hand on a yoga brick in Revolved Half Moon Pose raises the floor, making it easier to maintain balance and length through the spine during the twist. The added support helps reduce strain on the hamstrings and lower back while allowing you to focus on stability, core engagement, and controlled rotation through the chest. This variation is especially useful when building confidence and alignment in the pose.
