Legs Up the Wall Pose (Viparita Karani) is a gentle restorative inversion that encourages rest and relaxation while allowing the legs and lower body to release. Practised lying on the back with the legs extended vertically against a wall, the pose requires very little muscular effort and can be held comfortably for several minutes. Props can provide additional cushioning and support, helping the body settle more fully into the pose.
In Legs Up the Wall Pose, placing a folded blanket under the head helps keep the neck comfortable and gently aligned with the spine. A yoga belt loosely tied around the thighs encourages the legs to stay grounded and supported, reducing strain in the hips and lower back. Adding a sandbag over the feet provides a subtle sense of weight, helping the legs relax fully into the wall while deepening the feeling of stillness and calm.
In this deeply supported variation of Legs Up the Wall Pose, a bolster placed under the lower back helps gently tilt the pelvis and reduce any strain in the lumbar spine. A stack of rolled blankets against the wall provides a cushioned surface for the legs to rest against, easing pressure behind the knees and encouraging full relaxation. A yoga belt around the thighs offers subtle containment and stability, while a sandbag on the feet helps ground the legs and deepen the sense of release.
