    Heron Pose (Krounchasana)

A strong, seated pose that offers a deep hamstring and hip stretch while engaging the core and lifting the chest.

    Category: Seated / Forward Bend

    Difficulty: Intermediate

    Sanskrit/Pronunciation: Krounchasana (krown-CHAHS-uh-nuh)

Main Focus: Hamstrings, Calves, Hips, Spine

Props: Yoga Mat, Yoga Belt, Blanket, Yoga Brick

Heron Pose (Krounchasana) is a seated pose that combines a deep hamstring stretch with balance and length through the spine. Practised with one leg folded alongside the body while the opposite leg extends upwards, the pose encourages flexibility through the backs of the legs and mobility through the hips. Props can help make the position more accessible, allowing you to maintain an upright spine while gradually working towards extending the raised leg.

    How to Practise
    1. Sit on the floor with both legs extended forward
    2. Bend your left knee and draw the foot back beside your left hip (as in Hero Pose)
    3. Keep your right leg extended out in front
    4. Grasp your right foot with both hands (or a strap around the foot)
    5. Inhale to lengthen the spine, and exhale as you lift the right leg up, aiming to straighten it as much as is comfortable
    6. Keep the chest lifted and the shoulders relaxed
    7. Hold for 30 seconds to 1 minute, breathing steadily
    8. Gently release and repeat on the other side
    Benefits
    • Deeply stretches hamstrings and calves
    • Opens hips and strengthens the core
    • Improves posture and spinal extension
    • Encourages focus and balance
    Modifications
    • Use a strap around the lifted foot if you can’t reach with your hands
    • Sit on a folded blanket or block to support a more upright spine
    • Keep a bend in the lifted leg if hamstrings are tight
    • Avoid if you have knee or lower back injuries

    Heron Pose with Yoga Belt

Sitting on a folded blanket supported by two yoga bricks in Heron Pose helps lift the hips and create more space for the pelvis to tilt forward comfortably. Looping a yoga belt around the back and over the extended foot provides extra support as you hold the sides of the belt, reducing strain through the shoulders and hamstrings. This variation allows you to lengthen the spine and work towards the leg extension with greater stability, control, and ease.
