3 Mudras for Female Energy

Emma Jefelt

Mudras are hand gestures practiced in meditation or during our asana practice. We can use them to connect with ourselves and our emotions, and to help us foster feelings of strength, balance or calm whenever we need it. All mudras have different meanings and purpose and they can be a powerful tool in our practice. Whether you’re looking for peace and calm in stressful situations, help to overcome obstacles in life or maybe just tools to support you in feeling more balanced and grounded in everyday life, mudras can help you achieve this. We’ve explored 3 mudras for female energy that will help you connect to your divine femininity and feel empowered to take on challenges and change.

Yoni Mudra

Yoni mudra is one of the great mudras for female energy, and it is extremely powerful for silencing the mind and for harnessing your feminine power. The word Yoni means womb and this mudra is believed to help us achieve a state of calm and tranquility we experienced inside our mothers womb. This mudra also represents Shakti, the feminine power, and can help you harness your power and step into your divine femininity. To practice Yoni mudra:

  • Find a comfortable position, with your spine tall and straight
  • Bring your palms together in prayer pose
  • Press the tips of your fingers against one another and separate your palms, creating a tent shape with your hands
  • Keeping your thumbs and index fingers pressed together, bend and interlace your other fingers
  • Turn the mudra to point your index fingers down and focus on breathing into your lower abdomen
  • Breathe deeply in and out through your nose and notice the energy flowing through your body

Trimurti Mudra

Trimurti mudra is known as the gesture of the trinity, referring to the three main Hindu gods, Brahma , Vishnu and Shiva. The mudra represents the presence of all three forces within all of us and is hugely powerful in supporting you through transitions and change in life, as it helps instill a feeling of acceptance and peace. As one of the mudras for female energy, use Trimurti mudra to reduce feelings of stress and to help you accept and overcome challenges, however big or small. To practice Trimurti mudra:

  • Find a comfortable position, with your spine tall and straight
  • Bring your palms together at heart centre
  • Keeping your thumbs and index fingers connected open up your palms like wings
  • Place the mudra above your head to instill harness feelings of strength and power in times of change
  • Alternatively flip the mudra so that your palms are facing your body and your index fingers are pointing down. Then hold the mudra over your lower abdomen to help you find balance and calm if you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed
  • Breathe deep and try to envision your breath flowing like water; Through and around obstacles and going with the flow

Kali Mudra

Kali mudra represents the Hindu goddess, Kali, who embodies strength, destruction and power; Kali mudra is one of the most powerful mudras for female energy. The word Kali comes from the Sanskrit word Kala, which means time, and just as time itself Kali embodies the continual change and impermanence of life. Kali destroys the old to make space for the new, so whether it is a bad relationship, a challenging situation or you’re just not where you would like to be, Kali can help you cut ties with what doesn’t serve you, even when it’s though. To practice Kali mudra:

  • Find a comfortable seated position with a tall, straight back
  • Press your palms together in prayer pose
  • Fold down and interlace your three last fingers, keeping the the index fingers and thumbs pointing upwards.
  • Keep the mudra in front of your heart centre and breathe deep
  • You can practice the mudra with a mantra such as: “I am strong. I am powerful. I let go of what no longer serves me”
  • Breathe deep and envision letting go of things that hold you back with each outbreath
  • Alternatively place the thumbs of the mudra in between your eyebrows to connect to your third eye and your intuition or lift the mudra above your head and breathe deep to connect to strong feelings of power and strength.
