Savasana Poem: Trust

Savasana Poem: Trust

When I walk into your studio and meet you for the first time, I will want to put my trust in you.

After all, you are the teacher and I am the student. That’s the way it is meant to be.

However, it’s all very well you saying ‘Trust me, I’m a yoga teacher’, but I’ve heard the terrible stories in the media and so have you. Trust is betrayed. Trust is broken. Trust is exploited. It happens. Not that often but yes, it does happen.

So forgive me if I take my time. Forgive me if I am a little wary at first.

Believe me when I say I want to trust you. That I will come to trust you wholeheartedly. It will just take a little time.

Don’t push me on this. Just give me a chance to get to know you as a teacher.

Trust will come. And when it does, it will look like this:

I trust you to teach me well. To know what you are doing. To be properly trained.

I trust you to not pretend to be something that you are not.

I trust you to know me. To remember my name. To be interested in me and my development.

I trust you to not show favouritism.

I trust you to get the right balance between encouraging me and challenging me.

I trust you to not allow me to hurt or injure myself.

I trust you to correct my posture and alignment.

I trust you to always ask before touching me and to touch me in an appropriate manner.

I trust you to not embarrass me or humiliate me in front of the rest of the class.

I trust you to not take advantage of the trust I put in you.

I need you to trust me too, you know, for it is in trusting me that you will teach me to trust myself:

You can trust me to turn up to the session on time. To be wearing appropriate clothing. To be prepared.

You can trust me to give of my best. To focus on what you are saying. To work hard.

You can trust me to choose the right option for me. To listen to my body. To know how far is too far.

You can trust me to trust you. To do what you are asking of me. To listen to and apply the corrections that you give me.

You can trust me to treat everyone in the studio with dignity and respect.

You can trust me to come to you with any issues I may have arising from the class.

Trust me, your student, and I will trust you, my teacher.

Trust is a relationship, a two way flow.

Trust is dynamic.

Trust grows.

Trust is beautiful.

Trust is fragile.

Trust is to be cherished and nurtured.
