Savasana Poem: Lay aside the expectations

Savasana Poem: Lay aside the expectations

‘Tis the season to be jolly.

‘I have to be happy and jovial from morning until night, just like the big man himself.’

‘Tis the season to be perfect.

‘This winter celebration has to be the best one yet. Everything – from the dinner to the party outfit, from the gifts to the decorations – must be just right: so magical, so special, so awesome.’

And yet the reality for many of us is that the preparation and pressures to throw together the perfect Christmas can bring out the worst in us as we face physical and mental exhaustion, relationship stresses, financial strains, weakened immune systems and a constant sense of overwhelm.

As we now reach the end of our physical practice, it’s time to lay aside those expectations and breathe.

As you settle onto your mat, I invite you to lay down the to do lists and find rest for body, mind and soul.

As you relax into a comfortable position, I invite you to focus your attention on the life-giving energy that is flowing through your body, through the seven chakras, the main energy centres of your body.

I invite you to bring your attention to your root chakra – Muladhara – located at the base of your spine.

Lay aside all those distractions of the season that threaten your stability.

Remind yourself of what it is to feel grounded, confident of your sure foundation.

Pause

I invite you to bring your attention to your sacral chakra – Swadhisthana – located about 5cm below the navel.

Lay aside all those dissatisfactions of the season that threaten your sense of abundance.

Remind yourself of what it is to feel content, confident that you have everything you need.

Pause

I invite you to bring your attention to your solar plexus chakra – Manipura- located in the upper abdomen.

Lay aside all those situations of the season that threaten your self-confidence.

Remind yourself of what it is to feel assured, confident that you’ve got this.

Pause

I invite you to bring your attention to your heart chakra – Anahata – located in the centre of your chest, just above your heart.

Lay aside all those interactions of the season that threaten your peace.

Remind yourself of what it is to feel whole, confident in your ability to give and receive love.

Pause

I invite you to bring your attention to your throat chakra – Vishuddha – located at your throat.

Lay aside all those communications of the season that threaten your integrity.

Remind yourself of what it is to feel authentic, confident to express yourself truly and clearly.

Pause

I invite you to bring your attention to your third-eye chakra – Ajna – located at your forehead between the eyes.

Lay aside all those superficialities of the season that threaten your perceptiveness.

Remind yourself of what it is to feel intuitive, confident in your innate wisdom.

Pause

And finally, I invite you to bring your attention to your crown chakra – Samsara – located on the very top of your head.

Lay aside all those motivations of the season that threaten your spirituality.

Remind yourself of what it is to feel connected, confident of your inner beauty.

Pause

As you now return your awareness to this space, know that you do not need to pick up everything that you have laid down.

Take your time. Choose wisely.

‘Tis the season to be kind.

‘I can choose to slow down and make time and space for myself.’

‘Tis the season to be kind.

‘I can make this festive season a time to connect deeply with those I love.’

‘Tis the season to be kind.

‘I can stop rushing by and show compassion to those in need in my community.’

‘Tis the season to be kind.

‘The greatest gift of all does not come in a box wrapped with a ribbon.’
