Insight Yoga (book)

Insight Yoga (book)
Big Yoga Read: #10
Insight Yoga is s series of practices distilled by Sarah Powers. These combined disciplines, some yogic, some Buddhist and some Taoist, are designed to identify, open and strengthen the various physical and psychological components of one’s experience, fostering a kinder, clearer and altogether healthier and more mature relationship to one’s self and others. Insight Yoga inspires this psychospiritual transformation through passive (yin) and active (Yang) yoga postures combined with breathing practices, visualization, mindfulness meditation, self inquiry and dialogue, and extended periods of silence.

“Sarah Powers’s synthesis of wisdom traditions is awesome. Indeed, each tradition is like a transparent map, which when overlaid one upon another, gives a more complete rendering of the Living Event in which we are all participants. Insight Yoga will be of tremendous interest and benefit to many people.”—Erich Schiffmann, author of Yoga: The Spirit and Practice of Moving Into Stillness

Insight Yoga covers the various elements of Sarah's teaching. Within the just under 200 pages of A4 format, there are chapters on meditation, meridians, what she terms as yang yoga, pranayama practices, buddha-dharma and a comprehensive study of yin yoga itself – the postures and the reasons behind each posture. This is illustrated by both photographs and drawings that show the meridian pathways in the body. There are also several suggested sequences – both yin-based and dynamic. The structure is clear and accessible and you are able to dip in and out of it as well as reading from start to finish.

Having been fortunate enough to study with Sarah when she has visited the UK I was eagerly anticipating the release of this book. I'm pleased to say I am not disappointed, this is beautifully written and insightful. The descriptions of the meridians and the detail for each pose make this book an essential purchase for anybody wishing to study Yin Yoga. Indeed, I'd recommend it for any serious yoga student regardless of style.
