John Scott is one of the world's most well loved ashtanga yoga teachers. His knowledge comes direct from the late Patthabhi Jois, original Guru and Master of the ashtanga system that emanated from Mysore, India. In this DVD John guides us through the detailed rudiments of the ashtanga Primary Series. He explains everything you need to know, from sun salutations through to finishing sequences. He comments and demonstrates clearly and calmly all postures, their order, ujaii breath, correct rhythm and full vinyasa of the Primary Series. This DVD is not for beginners without previous experience of qualified ashtanga instruction. However, John Scott does make you feel relaxed throughout and keeps you in time to the unique rhythm of the practice, which he demonstrates with grace and humility. He is precise and clear with his explanations and demonstrations, but instructions flow from Sanskrit to English making it hard to follow at times. The practice sequences also move on too fast for

John’s demonstration at the beginning of the DVD is very inspiring. He glides with effortless ease through various complex asanas and captures the flow and beauty of Ashtanga yoga. In the introduction he discusses the significance of the breath, bandhas and dristhi and their interplay in a way that is very accessible. You can also choose which practice you want from beginner to full 90 minute Primary Series, or which section you would like concentrate on – like standing or seated. If you learn visually then this is a great way to learn how the asanas should be perfomed. John Scott is very traditional and sticks to his guru, Pattabhi Jois’s vinyasa counting system, so you know the method is correct – John’s graceful practice is testament to this.

I own the video and have seen it several times. My impression of it is that it is a wonderful demonstration of the primary series, maybe the best out there. However, I don't think it is a good teaching tool, as a lot of the transitions are unapproachable for beginners.

This is simply a timeless DVD. Each time I watch the introduction I'm reminded about the context as well as the important points of actually practicing this method. The DVD is designed to initiate the student at whichever level they are at, if they're honest. Unfortunately most people, even if not truly ready might try to accomplish the whole of the primary series. I don't think this is what John had in mind when he created the DVD. It's not a technique video, it's about doing the practice consistently so that you discover the techniques yourself over time. I recommend practicing with John, on this DVD for a month and just see what happens.
