The High Five Initiative is Yogamatters’ exciting new community scheme for 2017. This innovative initiative aims to support and encourage a range of great projects which are all transforming lives, renewing hope and working for a better future, both here in the UK and around the world.
Here at Yogamatters, we have much to be thankful for. Both personally and as a business. We’re proud to be the UK’s number one retailer of yoga-related products. Our website has a fresh, new look and we’ve been delighted to interview a diverse range of yogis and health and wellbeing specialists for our blog. It’s been a good year.
Gratitude is an integral part of the yogic tradition. There’s a sense in which all that we have and enjoy comes from the universe and belongs to the universe. From the air that we breathe to the food that we eat. Life itself. We choose to take time to recognise and acknowledge our dependence on the universe for all good things. We find a contentment in all that we have and embrace an attitude of gratitude.
A natural outworking of this gratitude is to look for ways to show appreciation and to return kindness in some way. To share. To honour our shared humanity. To give back. And so in gratitude for all that we have received, we at Yogamatters believe it’s the right time for us as a company to give something back. As members of the worldwide yoga community, we believe that out of the compassion and love that yoga engenders, Yogamatters’ commitment to social impact should be something that our customers come to expect and rely upon.
Here at Yogamatters, we believe it is natural and right for the wider yoga community to support projects that meet need, strengthen community, spread hope and raise awareness. For yoga is in its essence about sharing what we have been blessed with, about giving back out of the abundance in our own lives. And so for us at Yogamatters, this desire to give back arises out of an overwhelming sense of gratitude towards this wonderful world in which we live.
Over the years, the Yogamatters team have already been responding to requests for specific help and support. Yogamatters has highlighted particular projects and fundraising events through the blog; individual colleagues have offered their time and volunteered in ongoing projects and for special events; Yogamatters has supplied equipment and prizes for fundraising events and competitions. And as part of our Give Back Friday campaign at the end of November 2016, Yogamatters was able to send a donation to support the work of Ourmala, a London-based charity that brings Yoga and English classes to asylum seekers and refugees.
But now it is time for a more structured approach to our social impact. Now it is time to establish an initiative that will give back and support great projects in the UK and around the world in a more systematic way. And so at the beginning of 2017, we’re delighted to be introducing our High Five Initiative.
Celebrating Amazing Work
Think of a High Five. It’s a symbol of congratulations and celebration. It’s a way of saying ‘Well done! You did good!’ And there are a lot of people and causes that need to hear that right now. A High Five is an affirmation, a recognition, an encouragement. Think of all the individuals and organisations working tirelessly out there to bring hope and provision and peace into the lives of those that need it the most in our broken world. Those unsung heroes need a High Five for all that they are doing.
The High Five Initiative will celebrate the amazing work that is being done in communities all over the world – near and far, big and small – and send out a resounding ‘Well done!’ (accompanied by a virtual High Five!). The initiative will support the same five selected projects over the next five years. Each of these projects will receive an annual financial contribution from Yogamatters to support their work. In addition, the Yogamatters team will engage with these organisations in other ways to promote their events and to support with time, resources and encouragement.
We’re sure that you’ll be fascinated to find out which five projects Yogamatters has chosen to support. We’ll reveal these in a rolling programme in 2017, so that we can look at each organisation in turn in greater depth. We’re really looking forward to shining a light on these great projects and explaining exactly why we have selected each one. Once we have introduced you to each of the projects, we’ll keep you informed with regular updates and let you know about any ways you can be involved or support what is going on. We’ll let you know how our donations are being used and introduce you to individuals within these organisations whose lives are being transformed.
We are all part of the global yoga community. The High Five Initiative is being established to enable us to work together to make our world a better place for all.
That is at the heart of yoga.
